about

In 2014, master Gnawa musician Mâallem Hassan Ben Jaâfer joined with five other New York-based Moroccan musicians to form Innov Gnawa. They have since found a loving audience in their city by staying true to the traditions of this ancient ritual music.

REMIX ←→ CULTURE recorded and filmed Innov Gnawa performing live in a Brooklyn warehouse on June 7th, 2015. This debut album is a selection of 6 songs from that 8-hour live performance. For a glimpse into what that performance felt like, check out this video of “Hammadi” (Track 3):

The intent of this recording session was to celebrate this musical tradition from Morocco in harmony with digital remix art. The video captured from this Innov Gnawa performance has been remixed and presented to live audiences at various venues and festivals in New York and Morocco. For example, this video remix re-imagines “Toura Toura” (Track 6):

The accompanying limited edition 12" vinyl also embraces the spirit of celebrating traditional music in harmony with remix art. It features two tracks from the debut album, and a re-interpretation by Mr Assister.

Gnawa culture developed in Morocco, with roots in the forcible displacement of people from other African countries. Gnawa music has a role to fulfill in a healing ritual called the "lila" which means "night" in Arabic. A "lila" is an intimate, communal night of celebration that can last for up to 12 hours. It is a safe place for those who wish to enter into a trance, and lose themselves in the hypnotic rhythms and soaring melodies of Gnawa music.
